- Use a high quality lock on your door. For your convenience,
we sell locks.
- Uniform size boxes stack best. Try not to cram boxes with
too much stuff to avoid breakage.
- As you move into your storage unit, we suggest that you
make an inventory list of your goods.
- Be sure to list all contents of boxes on sides. Make an
inventory of all items by box number and keep it in a safe
place.
- Place any items that you will use frequently near front
of unit.
- Put electronic equipment in the rear of your unit (or
preferably in climate controlled space).
- Place large items in first and build to them.
- Place heavier boxes on bottom and lighter boxes on top.
- We suggest making small walkways in your unit.
- Wrap your pictures and mirrors in cardboard marking them
“fragile” and stock on end.
- Store sofas and mattresses on end (not sleeper sofas).
- Remove legs from large tables, if possible. They will
take up less room if they are disassembled.
- Use refrigerator shelves to store blankets and pillows.
- Defrost refrigerators and freezers at least 48 hours
prior to storage. Place activated charcoal (found at pet
shops) in the bottom, and have something to block the door
open.
- Drain all washing machines and garden hoses.
- Remove all gasoline and oil from lawnmowers and place
heavy paper or cardboard under them.
- It is not recommended to store clothing in closed plastic.
- We recommend a paper or cloth covering be placed over
clothing and upholstery items.
- Do not cover items with plastic as moisture may collect
and could possibly cause mold and mildew.
- To help prevent bugs or rodents, please do not store food
items, including pet food.
- Remember, do not store any COMBUSTIBLE items (examples,
gasoline, propane, paint thinner, paint, etc.).
- Place any loose items in the middle or back of the unit
away from the door. Small items may fall against the door
and make it difficult to roll the door up.
- SMILE! The hardest part is done.
The items that you would store in a climate controlled unit
would basically be items that you would not store in a garage.
We recommend climate controlled storage for:
- Electronics
- Matresses
- Books, papers and documents
- Pianos and other musical instruments
- Artwork and photos
